its various elements whilst also creating privacy or screening. the boundary wall is also exploited as a structural backdrop and a major defining feature. the garden has been zoned into arrival, play, relaxation, socialising, leisure and productive elements. paving elements are simplified to concrete pavers and black basalt gravel. this maintains a link to the simple, bold architecture of the house. the various runs of hedge are relatively short and typically broken or sliced through to allow views and light/shadow play across the day. planting is predominantly perennial and ornamental grasses. the former is planted primarily for colour, the latter for simple seasonal effect, lasting well into winter. lines of small, multi stemmed trees create height and sculptural definition. whole embodies a sense of discovery and revelation. our design intention for the garden and external spaces was to retain and enhance this character, creating a garden that keeps its privacy whilst simultaneously opening up a sense of space; a garden that contains an element of surprise whilst revealing new vistas and viewpoints; a garden that is relaxed and comfortable for family fun whilst retaining a sense of grandeur that befits the scale of the house. by simplifying the basic layout of the garden, rationalising and simplifying levels the garden is opened up to the functions of play, socialising and relaxation. the new levels, supported by the structural lines of pleached hedging, create greater privacy and the rejuvenation of materials and planting gives the garden a new lease of life. designers gavin mcwilliam and andrew wilson london courtyard working with the linear nature of the site, the design takes the visitor through a number of subtlety changing elements from garden to house. it also references the visual language of the interior with minimal hard and soft landscape treatments interspersed with flashes of strong colour. water was a desirable element within the space from both an acoustic and aesthetic point of view. reflections and shimmering light deliver life and vitality to the scheme. designers: gavin mcwilliam and andrew wilson contractor: outdoor options architect: mike rundell associates highgate garden the design focused on pleasure, delivering more open spaces for flexible use. the additional garden space was dedicated for play with an all-weather surface and free-standing wall to hit balls against. the main terrace areas were retained close to the house and pool. a pond fed by a rill formed a visual link with the new swimming pool. boulders run throughout the scheme to provide informal seats, diving plinths and sculptural forms integrating with the proposed planting. crosland hill stone was used for both the terraces and the boulders. these were hand picked in huddersfield and sawn to shape before being shipped to site and installed using a spider crane and some masterful scribing by the team. pleached ligustrum hedging was used to deliver privacy and to create spatial screening through the garden. clear routes are provided through the garden, but secret alternatives were also introduced to allow for a wider exploration of the garden both by children and adults. the borders were designed with ornamental meadow style planting provided informal and naturalistic planting including colourful and textural perennials and grasses. specimen mulistemmed amelanchiers were installed to provide seasonal interest and to deliver a sense of privacy near the house. a productive garden was incorporated alongside the garden office and orchard planting using characterful reclaimed orchard stock surrounds the play lawn with mass planting of molinia caerulea subsp. caerulea ' heidebraut ' and alium sphaerocephalon beneath. subtle lighting was included throughout to allow the garden to be used after dark either for extended play or for more social or recreational use. savill rose garden the new rose garden at the savill garden was opened by her majesty the queen in june 2010. this progressive design mass plants roses selected primarily for their perfume, colour intensity and repeat flowering capabilities to produce a new focus for the summer gardens at savill. the concept is “intense” with colour grading from the white and ivory cream of rosa sally holmes and r glamis castle to the deep blackcurrant reds of r munstead wood, r shakespeare and r burgundy ice. perfume fills the air and pathways take a route around the edge of the vortex like design to create changing views of the garden as a whole. one route takes the visitor down into the centre of the garden but a second route in the form of a ramped promontory allows the visitor to slowly rise above the garden. a 5m cantilevered grille floats out above the central, most intensely coloured and perfumed roses coming to a point at which only one individual at a time can experience the fragrance rising on the warm air. over 2500 roses have been planted within the garden but only 28 cultivars have been used. ribbed mounds spin off towards the woodland, planted with the transparent wands of molinia ‘heidebraut'. this garden has been featured in the times, country life and the daily telegraph. it won a bali award, a gold in the apld international design awards 2012 and the award for best communual outdoor space at the sgd just of the garden but as a driving force behind the design solution.the traditional formation of dew ponds was explored in which chalk was ground and mixed into a fine cement which was then spread on the surface of the pond excavation. this led in turn to the creation of elegant, free standing screen walls which frame and sometimes reflect this construction method and use of materials. screen walls re-appear informally through the garden partly as a means of spatial definition, creating privacy, glimpsed views, colour and light and partly to offer protection to the more delicate planting of the gravel garden. a wild flower meadow uses species appropriate to this location. extensive border plantings with a diverse range of perennials and grasses introduce dramatic waves of colour and texture across wide areas of the garden, new hedges replicate the wall structures to create a softer but architectural element and a dry garden habitat provides a sheltered space for dynamic textural plants and bulbs. driveway planting softens the garden into the setting of chorleywood common and screens the house from the road to settle the property as a whole into its local context. the naturalistic form of these landscape interventions restores the site to one in which the 21st century home by jane duncan architects is integrated within a naturalistic environment. designers: gavin
